Kentridge vs. Kentwood Basketball

I photographed Kentridge High School vs. Kentwood HIgh School varsity basketball game at Kentwood High School in Covington, Wash., on Friday, Dec. 18, 2009 for The New Tribune.

The Shoot:
The teams were evenly matched until the third period, when a buzzer beating half court shot gave the Kentridge Chargers the momentum to keep the lead for the rest of the game.

The Image:
Lighting inside a high school gym can be difficult, so I use 2 camera speedlights with remote triggers to stop the action and provide even light. In this image Kentridge forward Brendan Westendorf finds an opening to make a pass around Kentwood forward Taylor Jones.

Blaine vs. WF West Football

I photographed the Blaine High School vs. WF West High School first round playoff game at Tumwater District Stadium in Tumwater, Wash., on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 for The Bellingham Herald.

The Shoot:
The first round match up for the WIAA Class 2A bracket state playoffs featured hard hits from the undefeated Bearcats, which allowed them to keep the lead througout the game.

The Image:
Blaine running back Caleb Statham, top, gets tripped up by WF West defensive back Erik Forgione during the third quarter. Body language is an important aspect of sports photography, especially when facial expressions are mostly hidden by face masks.

Climate Change Action Day

I photographed the International Climate Change Action Day event at William A. Bush Park in Lacey, Wash., on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 for The Olympian.

The Shoot:
The event is one of many to serve as a public witness for governmental leaders to address the global climate crisis by adopting carbon dioxide emission limits of 350 parts per million, the level that is thought to be the safe upper limit for CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere.

The Image:
Event goers were encouraged to walk or bike along the Chehalis Western Trail to the event, so I made this picture to incorporate this aspect of the event.

WF West vs. Tumwater Football

I photographed the W.F. West Chehalis Bearcats vs. the Tumwater T-Birds high school football game at Tumwater District Stadium in Tumwater, Wash., on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009 for The Olympian.

The Shoot:
It was a typical Friday night high school football game, but this particular one was a key Evergreen Conference match up.

The Image:
Football action can be challenging to photograph especially when much of the action is contained within the center of the field and the ball carrier is blocked by other players. In that moment when they break free you can capture the ball carrier evading his pursuer.

Summer’s End

I photographed the Summer’s End at Lacey – Rod, Custom and Specialty car show at Huntamer Park in Lacey, Wash., on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 for The Olympian.

The Shoot:
The car show signified the end of the season and gave car enthusiasts the opportunity to show their cars one more time before having to garage them for damp fall and winter seasons.

The Image:
Details often help tell the story better than an overall. I began working with my subject and noticed that he had a photo album in the trunk, so I asked if he could show me a picture of what the 1947 Mercury Coupe looked like before it became the amazing machine it is today.

Community Garden

I photographed a community garden at a low-income apartment complex in Olympia, Wash., on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009 for The Olympian.

The Shoot:
A resident of the Courtside Apartments negotiated with the management to allow the residents to have a community garden, where both young and old alike can enjoy the fruits (or vegetables) of their labor.

The Image:
Three-year-old Riley Burton found a worm among the green beans she harvested from the garden and decided that she needed to show it to everyone, including the photographer, so I made this image.

Lavender Portrait

Kerry and I visited the Stringtown Farms in Eatonville, Wash., on Saturday, July 25, 2009 to pick fresh lavender for our home.

The Shoot:
While I did not plan to turn the venture into a photo shoot, I just could not resist as the colors in the lavender fields were striking and made such a great background to complement my beautiful subject.

The Image:

The key to a good portrait is to make it look as natural as possible. In this image Kerry stopped making her selections for a few moments and turned toward the camera. I framed my subject and made this image.

34th Annual Capital Lakefair Run

I photographed the 34th annual Capital Lakefair run at Heritage Park in Olympia, Wash., on Saturday, July 18, 2009 for The Olympian.

The Shoot:
Making an interesting phtograph at a running race is always a challenge. Whenever possible, I like to find a nice background and then wait for the group or leader to come along to make the photograph more interesting.

The Image:
I noticed that the morning light was finding its way through the buildings in Downtown Olympia to a leg of the 8K run. Having the state capitol building in the background added to the depth of the picture and gave the reader a location associated with the event.
